Fabrics: acrylic, coated polyester, olefin
Solution-dyed acrylic. Pigment is mixed into the fiber during manufacturing rather than printed on top, so the fabric does not fade or “gray out” in the sun for years. Weight is typically 230–300 g/m², with a UV protection factor of UPF 50+ (blocking about 98% of UV radiation). The fabric breathes and dries fast but is not fully waterproof — it repels drizzle and short rain, but lets water through in a prolonged downpour.
PVC- or PU-coated polyester. A 180–220 g/m² base fabric coated with a polymer film that makes it fully waterproof (hydrostatic head rating of 1000 mm or higher). Cheaper than acrylic but breathes worse — condensation builds up under the canopy in the heat, and the coating cracks at the folds over time, especially under direct tropical sun.
Olefin (polypropylene). A budget option with acceptable UV resistance but noticeably shorter service life and a tendency to stretch — usually used for entry-level umbrellas and awnings rather than commercial sites with high turnover.
