Sourcing outdoor and garden furniture from China: for villas, hotels and restaurants

A four-bedroom villa with a terrace and pool needs a minimum of 15–25 pieces of outdoor furniture: sun loungers, a dining set, lounge sofas, umbrellas. At a local showroom or from a European brand that runs €15,000–35,000. The main challenge with outdoor furniture is durability in a hot, humid climate. The UV index in Phuket or Bali sits at 10–12 for most of the year, humidity at 80–90%. Choosing the wrong material means replacing the furniture after one or two seasons, wiping out the original saving entirely.

Materials: comparison table

The key sourcing mistake is ordering “rattan” without specifying the material. Natural rattan degrades outdoors in a humid climate in one season. Synthetic HDPE rattan with UV inhibitors lasts 7–10 years. The price difference at the factory is 15–25%; the real-life difference is far greater.

Aluminium: what to check

Aluminium frames dominate outdoor furniture — they don’t rust, are lightweight and take powder coating in any RAL colour. But coating quality varies enormously:

• Layer thickness — at least 60 µm to EN 13438 (QUALICOAT). A thin coating peels in sea air within 1–2 years, especially around pool areas.
• Alloy grade — 6005/6063 alloy for extruded profiles; strong cast nodes at connection points.
• Seals — silicone caps on profile ends and joints; without them water enters the hollow section and corrodes the frame from the inside.

Outdoor fabrics and cushions

Cushions are the fastest-wearing element of outdoor furniture in a subtropical climate:

• Face fabric: UV-resistant acrylic (Sunbrella or equivalent), fade resistance rated at 1,500+ hours of direct sun. Untreated polyester fades within 3–4 months in Thailand.
• Filling: quick-drying open-cell foam with drainage holes. Without drainage, cushions absorb water and develop mould within 2–3 weeks in the rainy season.
• Covers: removable with YKK zips. Non-removable covers cannot be washed — they become a mould source within one rainy season.

All fabric parameters are locked in the specification with manufacturer and article number — a substitution for an “equivalent” without approval is not acceptable.

Quality control before shipment

Outdoor furniture is inspected to AQL/ISO 2859:

1. Powder-coating thickness — pocket gauge at 5 points per piece type, norm ≥ 60 µm.
2. Rattan weave — uniformity, no skips, tears or unfinished ends.
3. Frame welds — strength and consistency, no porosity or flash.
4. Cushion fabric — matches sample, seam straightness, drainage present, covers removable.
5. Completeness — bolts, end caps, assembly instructions.
6. Packaging — frames flat-packed with cardboard corner protectors, cushions in polythene.

Logistics: bulky cargo

Flat-packed outdoor furniture is bulky but relatively light. A 40HQ (76 m³) typically holds 50–70 dining sets or 80–120 sun loungers. For villas and small hotels, LCL (groupage, billed per m³) is often more economical. Sea transit from Guangdong: 14–21 days to Phuket, 18–25 days to Bali. Mini-case: hotel on Koh Samui, $18,000 in replacements after one season

A small hotel (12 villas) sourced poolside furniture independently: 36 sun loungers and 6 sofa sets from a WeChat supplier. The supplier sent photos — attractive woven rattan, half the market price.

On arrival: the rattan was natural, not synthetic. After one rainy season the weave began cracking and delaminating. The frames rusted over the same period — the profile turned out to be ordinary steel with powder coating, not aluminium.

The hotel replaced everything at its own expense — $18,000 for the furniture plus logistics. The original “saving” became a complete loss.
