A chair is the most frequently replaced piece of furniture in a restaurant, cafe, or hotel: it gets moved, rocked on, and knocked against table and wall corners 300-500 times a day per dining room. A wrong call on frame or upholstery at order time is not a one-off breakage — it is a batch-wide defect. Wobbly chairs get replaced not one at a time but as a full set, to keep the room visually uniform. Here is a breakdown of the frame and seat types and what to specify for a given venue format.

Frames: solid wood, bent wood, metal, polypropylene

Solid hardwood

Beech, oak, ash — the classic choice for restaurant dining rooms and hotel lobbies. Parts join with mortise and tenon, and the joints under the seat are reinforced with metal brackets — if damaged, the frame can be sanded, reglued, and restored for decades, unlike glued household joints. Asian rubber wood is a cheaper alternative to beech with similar density, but holds its shape slightly worse under humidity swings near a pool or on an open terrace.

Where to use: restaurant dining rooms, hotel lobbies and restaurants, mid-range and premium interiors.

Bent wood (bentwood chair)

Rods or veneer are steam-bent at a few joints — the design is lighter than a classic solid-wood chair and needs fewer joints, making it cheaper to produce. Bent wood matches solid wood in bending strength, but restoring a broken bent element is harder — the part is usually replaced rather than reglued.

Where to use: cafes, bistros, coffee shops — formats with fast table turnover and a need for a lighter chair.

Metal: tube and cast aluminum

Steel tube 18-25 mm in diameter with a wall of 1.2 mm or more and a powder-coat finish is the standard for bar, banquet, and outdoor chairs: lightweight, stackable 8-10 high, and resistant to chipping under frequent rearranging. Tube thinner than 1.2 mm flexes and loosens at welded joints within 1-2 years of intensive use. Cast aluminum is heavier than tube but does not corrode from salt and chlorine — a premium choice for poolside terraces and open hotel areas.

Where to use: bars, banquet halls, summer terraces, poolside zones.

Fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene

A one-piece monobloc (seat, back, and often legs molded as a single part) made of polypropylene with added fiberglass (typically 20-30% by weight) and a UV stabilizer. It does not rot or rust, washes clean under pressure, and stacks 10+ high. Household polypropylene without fiberglass and UV protection yellows and turns brittle under tropical sun within a season — outdoor use needs the reinforced, stabilized version.

Where to use: summer terraces, fast-casual venues, banquet halls with frequent furniture rearranging, budget formats.

Synthetic rattan on an aluminum frame

Where to use: restaurant terraces, hotel lounge areas, poolside zones.

Seats and upholstery: bare, seat pad, full upholstery

  • Bare seat, no upholstery (wood, polypropylene, perforated metal) — the cheapest and easiest to clean solution: nothing wears out, no fabric to replace. The downside is lower comfort for long seating.
  • Removable or fixed seat pad — foam at 30-35 kg/m³ or higher under fabric or eco-leather. A middle ground between comfort and cost: the seat cover can be reupholstered separately from the frame when it wears.
  • Full upholstery (seat and back) — maximum comfort for lobbies, lounges, and fine dining, but also the highest fabric requirements: Martindale of 60,000 cycles minimum for a general dining room, 80,000-100,000+ for high-traffic zones, plus a fire-retardant finish per the venue’s local code. For bars and reception areas, pigmented (protected) leather or PU leather with a reinforced top coat is preferable — it resists abrasion and spot disinfection with alcohol-based cleaners, unlike household aniline leather.

Service life: stackability and joints

A chair’s service life is set by joint quality, not the material alone:

  • Stackability. Banquet and bar chairs are engineered with reinforced contact points for stacking 6-10 units high; a household chair cracks at the seams under that load within a season.
  • Foot protection. Plastic or rubber leg tips prevent slipping and protect flooring — without them, metal and wooden legs scratch tile and hardwood under frequent rearranging.
  • Batch repeatability. A restaurant with 80 seats or a hotel with 120 rooms orders dozens of identical chairs — what matters is that the factory can reliably repeat the batch 2-3 years later for a top-up order without a visible difference in wood tone or fabric.
  • Test reports. As with other contract furniture, ask for a report per EN 15372 or BIFMA — the static load and stacking cycle confirms the claimed service life rather than just a visually “sturdy” frame.

What gets cut and has to be redone later

The most common mistake is ordering household polypropylene chairs without fiberglass and UV stabilization for a summer terrace: within one season under tropical sun, the plastic yellows, loses flexibility, and cracks at the leg joints under stacking. The second common redo is steel tube thinner than 1.2 mm for a banquet hall: the savings on metal are invisible in photos, but welded joints loosen within the first year of intensive rearranging, and the whole batch has to be replaced. The third mistake is full upholstery with fabric rated below 60,000 Martindale cycles in a high-traffic zone: the upholstery wears through at the folds in 1-1.5 years instead of the claimed 5.
