The entry door is the one door in a building that has to do three jobs at once: stop a break-in, hold heat, and block street noise. A weak choice doesn’t show up in the showroom — a thin sheet bends under a crowbar, not a finger, and a thermal bridge without a break doesn’t frost over in the store, only through the first cold winter. Here’s how steel doors differ from aluminum entrance systems, what a burglary-resistance class and thermal break actually mean in practice, and what to lock into the spec when ordering from a factory in China.

Steel entry doors: sheet thickness and burglary resistance

The standard construction for houses, apartments, and service entrances — a steel sheet on both faces of the slab, a core fill (mineral wool or PU foam), and an internal structural frame with reinforcing ribs.

  • Sheet thickness: 1.2 mm or thinner is the budget segment with no real break-in protection — it caves under a crowbar; 1.5–2 mm is the standard for residential use; 2 mm and up is premium and high-traffic commercial entrances.
  • Locking points: from 1–2 on budget models to 4–5 on burglary-resistant doors — deadbolts engage the frame around the slab’s perimeter (top, bottom, hinge side), not just at the lock.
  • Burglary resistance class (EN 1627, RC1–RC3 for residential use): RC2 is the baseline for a house or apartment entry door — it includes an armored cylinder guard, hinges protected against forced removal, and a reinforced frame. RC3 is for ground-floor units, offices holding valuables, and server rooms.
  • Core fill: mineral wool or PU foam at 25–35 kg/m³ density holds both heat and sound; a honeycomb (hollow) fill is fine for internal technical doors but not for a street-facing entry door.
  • Pros: the best burglary resistance per dollar, wide choice of finishes (MDF overlays, powder coating, wood-look).
  • Cons: without powder coating and rust protection on the edges, it corrodes in humid coastal climates; heavier than aluminum systems — needs reinforced hinges (3+ per slab over 40 kg).

Aluminum entrance systems: for glazed and commercial entries

A profile system with glazing, or a combined “aluminum shell + steel core” build — the standard for hotel, office, restaurant, and villa entrances with panoramic glazing.

  • Thermal break: a polyamide insert at least 24 mm wide between the outer and inner profile, interrupting the cold bridge. Without it (“cold” aluminum), the profile conducts outdoor temperature straight through — condensation and frost on the frame in winter are guaranteed, even with an energy-efficient glass unit.
  • Glazing: for an entrance system, only tempered or laminated (triplex) glass at 6 mm and up — tempered glass breaks into blunt fragments, and laminated glass holds shape even when cracked. Plain sheet glass in a high-traffic entrance is an injury risk.
  • Profile: wall thickness of 1.4–1.8 mm and up for structural members of the entrance system — thinner profile bends under the heavy daily use of swing doors on a commercial entrance.
  • Pros: narrow frames with more glazed area, doesn’t rust, works with panoramic and automatic (sliding, revolving) entrance systems.
  • Cons: aluminum alone, without a steel core, doesn’t match the burglary resistance of a steel door — for high-risk entries it’s paired with a reinforced lock and door closer rather than used as the villa’s sole line of defense.

Thermal insulation and the installation joint: where the heat actually goes

The slab isn’t the only source of heat loss. A thermal-break threshold (an insulated insert between the outer and inner section of the sill) is mandatory in a cold climate — a solid metal threshold acts as a cold bridge regardless of slab thickness. A multi-loop gasket (2–3 loops around the perimeter of both frame and slab) holds heat and sound together — a single loop drafts at the corners as soon as the building settles even slightly. The installation joint between the frame and the wall needs to be filled with spray foam and sealed on both sides with a vapor/moisture membrane — without it, the foam absorbs moisture and loses its insulating value within one season, regardless of door quality.

Sound insulation of entry doors

For apartments and hotels, street or corridor noise often matters more than burglary resistance. Sound rating comes down to three factors: core fill density (mineral wool or PU foam, not honeycomb), the number of gasket loops, and how tightly the slab seats against the frame without gaps. A standard steel door with one gasket loop gives roughly 25–28 dB; with two or three loops and a dense fill, 30–35 dB — a noticeable drop in noise from a stairwell or a hotel’s shared corridor.

What to lock into the spec when ordering from a factory

  • Steel sheet thickness (at least 1.5 mm for residential use) and fill density (PU foam/mineral wool at 25–35 kg/m³) — not total door weight, which can be padded out with a cheap filler.
  • Burglary resistance class (RC2/RC3 under EN 1627) and the number of locking points — as a separate spec line, since a budget lock and a certified one often look identical.
  • Thermal break width in the aluminum profile (24 mm and up) and threshold type — with a thermal break for cold climates.
  • Number of gasket loops (2–3) and glazing type in the entrance system — tempered or laminated glass, never plain sheet glass.
