Suspended Ceiling Types: Stretch, Drywall, Slat, or Grid — How to Choose

A suspended ceiling handles more than looks: it hides services (ductwork, cable trays, AC piping), levels an uneven structural slab, and gives lighting somewhere to sit. The choice comes down to three factors: how much room height the system takes up, how well it handles moisture and temperature swings, and what happens during a leak or repair — whether services can be reached without tearing out the whole structure. Here are four common systems and what to lock into the spec when ordering from a factory.

Stretch ceilings (PVC and fabric)

A film is stretched onto an aluminum or plastic track around the room perimeter after heating with a hot-air gun (PVC) or without heating (fabric systems).

  • PVC film: 0.17–0.25 mm thick, seamless up to about 5–5.5 m wide (wider spans need a welded seam), in matte, glossy, or satin finish. Fully sealed — if there’s a leak from above, the film holds the water (up to 100 L/m²) and keeps its shape until it’s drained through a removed light fixture.
  • Fabric membrane: polyester with a polyurethane coating, breathable, and unaffected by sub-zero temperatures (unlike PVC, which stiffens in the cold), but it doesn’t hold water in a leak.
  • Pros: minimal height loss — just 3–5 cm; installs in a single day with no dust or wet trades; hides any unevenness in the structural slab.
  • Cons: PVC punctures with a sharp object; uncertified cheap film can smell and carries a poor fire rating; multi-level designs with cove lighting cost more than single-level drywall.
  • What to check in the spec: fire safety certificate (Class B-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1 or local equivalent), film density and manufacturer (German brands like Pongs or Renolit, or a vetted Chinese equivalent), and backing for spotlights and track lighting installed before the film goes up.

Drywall ceilings

Gypsum board panels on a metal frame (CD/UD channel) hung from the structural slab.

  • Board types: standard (white face paper) for dry rooms; moisture-resistant board (green face paper) for kitchens and bathrooms — not a fix for a direct leak; fire-rated board (pink face paper) for escape routes and utility rooms.
  • Board thickness: 9.5 mm for a single-layer ceiling, or 12.5 mm for multi-layer and curved designs.
  • Pros: a perfectly flat, monolithic surface for painting; supports multi-level designs, niches, and hidden cove lighting; two-layer boarding improves sound insulation.
  • Cons: takes up 7–10 cm of height for a single level, 12–15 cm or more for multi-level designs; a wet trade — jointing compound and paint take several days to cure; a leak soaks the board and requires cutting out and replacing the section.
  • What to check in the spec: hanger spacing no more than 600 mm apart (wider spacing lets the structure flex and crack at the joints), board brand (Knauf, Gyproc, or a vetted Chinese equivalent), and at least two coats of jointing compound plus primer before painting.

Slat (linear) ceilings

Narrow aluminum or steel slats (open or closed-joint system, 100, 150, or 200 mm wide) clip into a carrier rail (stringer) hung on adjustable hangers.

  • Finish: powder coating (RAL colors), mirror chrome, or wood-look laminate. Corrosion resistance is high — aluminum doesn’t rust even in humid coastal climates.
  • Pros: fully moisture-resistant and unaffected by condensation — the standard for bathrooms, pool areas, kitchens, and covered terraces; individual slats pop out for full access to services without dismantling the whole ceiling; a dry install that takes one day.
  • Cons: takes up 6–8 cm of drop height; visible joints between slats and stringers (less seamless than drywall or stretch); thin slats dent on impact, and a replaced section is visible if it’s from a different production batch.
  • What to check in the spec: aluminum thickness (0.4–0.6 mm minimum to prevent sagging), clip type (open-joint for ventilation gaps or closed-joint for a seamless look), and factory finish from a single RAL batch to avoid color mismatch on reorders.

Grid ceilings (Armstrong-style and grillato)

  • Armstrong-style: mineral fiber or metal tiles, 600×600 mm, sit in a visible T-bar frame (white or black). The standard for offices, retail, and medical spaces — fast installation, free access to services through any tile, and drop-in fixtures made to the same module install without modifying the frame.
  • Grillato: an open cell grid, usually aluminum, in 24×24, 50×50, 75×75, or 100×100 mm cells, leaving the structural slab and wiring visible above. Used where open-type ventilation and visual access to services matter more than concealment — parking structures, warehouses, loft interiors, mall entrances.
  • Pros of both: minimal installation labor, full access to services at any time, and good moisture resistance for the metal versions.
  • Cons: a visible technical frame — unsuitable for premium residential interiors; standard mineral fiber tiles absorb moisture and yellow in constant damp conditions (a vinyl-faced moisture-resistant version is needed there).

Mini-case: why a bathroom drywall ceiling got replaced with a slat ceiling

On a coastal-climate project, the designer specified moisture-resistant drywall in every villa bathroom to match the living room finish. Eight months in, mold appeared at the board joints in two bathrooms with weak extraction, and paint started peeling near the cornices from constant condensation. The sections had to be torn out and replaced with an open-joint aluminum slat ceiling, which added ventilation through the joint gaps and fully solved the moisture problem. The lesson: in rooms with high humidity and weak ventilation, even moisture-resistant drywall is not a substitute for a slat ceiling or another fully sealed system.
