WPC decking has replaced natural wood on most terraces, pool decks and open verandas precisely because it doesn’t rot and doesn’t need annual treatment — but the difference between a cheap uncapped hollow board and a quality capped high-density one doesn’t show up in a supplier’s catalog photo. It shows up a season or two later: fading, warping, or moisture soaking in at the board ends. Here’s what WPC is made of, what construction options exist, and what to check when ordering from a factory.
What WPC is: material composition
WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) is a mix of wood flour (50–70% by weight), thermoplastic (usually HDPE, sometimes PVC) and functional additives: UV stabilizers against fading, flame retardants, colorants and anti-fungal agents against mold. The mix is extruded through a die into the required board profile.
The wood-to-plastic ratio defines the material’s character: more wood flour makes the board look and feel closer to real timber but more moisture-sensitive; more plastic makes it more stable and water resistant, but it looks more “plastic” and holds less warmth underfoot than real wood.
Solid or hollow boards
- Solid. A solid cross-section with no cavities. Stronger under bending load, handles point loads from furniture and equipment, and lasts longer under heavy use. Heavier and more expensive — typical for commercial projects, waterfront restaurants and public boardwalks.
- Hollow. Longitudinal cavities inside the board cut weight and material use by 20–30% at comparable thickness. Cheaper to produce and ship (less weight, lower freight cost), but needs closer joist spacing (typically 30–35 cm versus 40–50 cm for solid boards) and handles point loads worse — narrow furniture legs without pads can leave dents.
Capped (co-extrusion) or uncapped decking
Capped decking is made by co-extrusion: a core with a high wood-flour content (for stiffness and texture) is wrapped in a protective polymer layer 1–2 mm thick on all sides — top, bottom and edges. This layer blocks moisture absorption and UV fading exactly where uncapped boards are most vulnerable: the cut ends and the underside that sits against the joists.
- Capped. Doesn’t need annual oiling, resists mold and fading, and typically carries a 10–25 year manufacturer warranty. Costs 20–40% more than uncapped boards.
- Uncapped. Cheaper, but the exposed wood flour on the surface absorbs moisture and darkens faster, especially at the ends and anywhere in contact with ground or water. Needs periodic treatment with a WPC-specific protective oil (not the same product as natural wood oil) every 1–2 years.
WPC density and how it affects service life
WPC density is measured in kg/m³ and directly determines strength and water resistance:
- 700–900 kg/m³ — budget tier, usually hollow boards without capping. Suits dry temperate climates and private terraces under light load.
- 900–1100 kg/m³ — mid tier, often with partial capping (protective layer on top only).
- 1100–1400 kg/m³ — premium tier, full capping, maximum resistance to moisture and UV. Best for tropical climates, pool terraces and commercial projects.
Density should be a separate line item in the spec — it cannot be judged by eye or from a photo, and the price gap between tiers runs 40–50%.
Surface texture and slip resistance
The board’s top surface is formed with a texture: smooth, brushed (imitating weathered wood), or embossed with a wood-grain pattern. For wet areas — pool terraces, boardwalks, entrance zones — the slip-resistance rating matters (usually quoted on the German R scale, R10–R11 for wet zones), achieved through a grooved or brushed surface.

Fastening systems: exposed or hidden
- Exposed fastening. Screws driven through the board’s face into the joists. Cheaper, easier to install and to repair a single board — a damaged board is simple to remove. Requires stainless or galvanized screws (plain steel rusts and streaks), and the screw heads stay visible on the surface.
- Hidden fastening. Plastic or metal clips seat into a groove on the underside of the board edge, so no fastener is visible from the top. Gives a flat, seamless-looking surface, but costs more in hardware and requires more precise installation — not every crew handles the system correctly.
What to lock down in the spec when ordering from a factory
- Density in kg/m³ — not just “premium grade” without a number.
- Construction — solid or hollow, and wall thickness for hollow boards.
- Capping — yes/no, and the protective layer thickness in mm.
- Wood-to-plastic ratio (e.g. 60/40) — affects weight, feel and price.
- Slip-resistance rating for wet zones and UV-resistance test reports.
- Fastening system — exposed or hidden, clip type, fastener material (stainless steel).
