Tempered Glass, Laminated Glass, Frosted: What to Choose and Where
Tempered, laminated, frosted and bent glass compared: strength, how each breaks, and which one to use for a shower, staircase, or façade.

Most buyers choosing glass for a shower, staircase, façade, or countertop look only at thickness and price — and miss the thing that actually matters: how the material behaves when it fails. A pane that looks identical to the eye can be plain float glass, tempered glass, or laminated glass, and the difference determines the safety of whoever is standing under or next to it, not the aesthetics. Here’s how glass types differ, what the classifications mean, and which glass goes where.
Float (annealed) glass — the base material
Float glass is formed by drawing molten glass over a bed of molten tin, gets no heat treatment, and costs less than every other type. On impact it shatters into large, sharp shards — which is why most building codes flatly prohibit it in doors, showers, balustrades, and floor-level glazing. Float glass belongs in framed mirrors, decorative inserts, and any zone shielded from direct contact and impact load.
Tempered glass (toughened): for doors, countertops, showers
Tempered (toughened) glass is made by heating a sheet to roughly 650°C and then rapidly cooling it with air jets. The surface compresses while the core stays in tension — the result is 4–5x higher impact and bending strength than float glass of the same section, plus resistance to thermal shock of up to 150°C differential. On failure, the sheet breaks into small, blunt granules with no sharp edges — the basis for its “safety glass” classification under EN 12150.
The key constraint: tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or edge-worked after tempering — any edge treatment releases the stored stress and the sheet shatters. All cutouts for hinges, handles, and hardware are done before heat treatment, so dimensions have to be locked into the spec before production starts.
A second, rarer but real, risk is spontaneous breakage caused by nickel sulfide (NiS) inclusions inside the glass. For critical installations — hung façades, elevated balustrades, overhead glazing above walkways — request a Heat Soak Test (HST, EN 14179): the batch is baked at roughly 290°C for several hours to trigger failure of unstable panes at the factory, not on site.
Typical thicknesses run 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 19mm. Common uses: shower screens and doors (8–10mm), glass countertops and shelving, kitchen backsplashes, and light balustrade infill with no heavy edge load.
Laminated glass: holds together on impact
Laminated glass is two or more glass plies bonded under heat and pressure with a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) or a stiffer SGP (ionoplast) interlayer. A build-up marked 8.8.4 means two 4mm plies with a 0.76mm interlayer. The governing standard is EN ISO 12543.
The key difference from plain tempered glass is what happens on failure. The fragments stick to the interlayer rather than falling out of the opening, and the pane keeps its shape even when punctured. That’s why laminated glass — not tempered glass on its own — is required for overhead glazing (skylights, canopies, awnings), glass floors and treads, elevated balustrades, and façades in seismic or high-wind zones. A side benefit is acoustic damping and up to 99% UV blocking, which cuts interior fading in tropical climates.
For the highest load cases, the individual plies are pre-tempered before lamination — “toughened laminated glass” holds impact better than annealed laminated glass and stays safe on failure. That’s the standard spec for glass floors, stairs, and structural glazing.
Frosted and decorative glass: privacy without curtains
- Sandblasting. An abrasive jet matte-finishes the surface mechanically — the effect is permanent and does not wear off. The texture is slightly rough, and fingerprints show more than on a polished etch.
- Acid etching (satin finish). A chemical process gives a smoother, silky matte finish that cleans more easily and resists smudging — the better choice for doors and partitions in public spaces.
- Frosted film. Applied over clear glass — the cheapest option, but the film can scratch or peel, so it has a shorter service life than a treated surface.
- Back-painted (lacquered) glass. Glass with an opaque paint layer on the reverse side — a wide color range, used for kitchen backsplashes and decorative cabinet-door panels.
Tinted, mirrored, and low-E glass
Tinted glass (grey, bronze, green, blue) cuts light transmission and solar heat gain — relevant for façades and terrace glazing in hot climates. Mirror glass is made by depositing silver or aluminum on the back surface — the base material for interior mirrors, including backlit ones (more in our guide to backlit mirrors). Low-E coating is a thin metal-oxide layer that reflects infrared radiation: in Thailand, the UAE, and Indonesia this noticeably cuts the cooling load without changing how the glass looks.
Bent (curved) glass
For curved façades, staircase balustrades, and bespoke furniture, glass is heated to its softening point (~600°C) in an oven and shaped over a mold at the required radius. The process is slower than flat tempering, the minimum bend radius depends on sheet thickness, and cost runs 2–3x a flat equivalent because of the custom tooling and longer production cycle — worth building into your lead-time planning.

Where buyers cut corners — and end up redoing the work
The most common mistake is specifying plain tempered glass where code and common sense both call for laminated glass: skylights, entrance canopies, overhead awnings. Tempered glass is safer than float glass, but on failure it still comes down entirely — that’s not acceptable under overhead glazing above people in most jurisdictions. The second common rework is ordering tempered glass “roughly to size” and planning to trim it on site: cutting isn’t possible after tempering, the whole sheet is scrapped, and a replacement means another 2–3 week production cycle. A third false economy shows up in HORECA projects — frosted film instead of acid etching on high-traffic entrance doors and partitions: the film scratches and peels within 1–2 years, while an etched surface lasts decades without redoing.

Laminated glass or tempered glass — which is stronger and safer?
Impact resistance is similar, but the two behave very differently once they fail. Tempered glass falls apart completely — nothing holds it in place. Laminated glass (a "triplex" of glass plies bonded with a PVB interlayer) stays attached to the film when it cracks and does not fall out of the opening. That is why overhead glazing, canopies, glass floors, and stairs require laminated glass, not simply tempered glass.
What glass do I need for a shower enclosure?
8–10mm tempered glass is the standard for shower screens and doors. It withstands impact and temperature swings, and if it breaks it will not cut skin. For frameless enclosures with no top rail, go up to 10–12mm for extra rigidity.
Can tempered glass be cut or drilled after tempering?
No. Any edge work or drilling after tempering releases the surface stress and the sheet shatters — sometimes within seconds, sometimes weeks later. All cutouts for hinges, locks, and hardware must be done before tempering, so dimensions and hole placement need to be locked into the spec before production starts.
What glass should I choose for a glass floor or staircase?
Toughened laminated glass — several plies of tempered glass bonded with PVB or SGP interlayer. It is the only combination that carries foot traffic loads and, if one ply cracks, does not collapse or fall out. Plain tempered glass without lamination is not used for floors or treads.
Is frosted glass a film, or is the surface itself treated?
Both exist. Sandblasting and acid etching change the glass surface itself — the effect does not wear off or peel, and etching leaves a smoother, more fingerprint-resistant finish. Frosted film and back-painted (lacquered) glass are coatings applied over clear glass — cheaper, but the film can scratch or peel off.
