A closet system is not one product — it is a kit of separate decisions: storage format, frame type, interior fittings, and doors. Getting the format wrong costs more than it looks: a tight closet without a pull-down rod turns the top tier into dead storage, and a budget wire-frame system on a long span starts sagging under the weight of clothing within a year. Here is a breakdown of the main system types, what they are built from, and how to pick a format for a given room and budget.

Three storage formats

  • Sliding-door wardrobe — a closed cabinet with sliding doors. A compact solution for bedrooms of 8-10 m² (86-108 sq ft) and up, but access is from one side only and depth is capped at 600-650 mm (24-26 in).
  • Built-in closet — modules fill a niche, alcove, or a partitioned section of a room, using the room’s existing geometry to save space.
  • Walk-in closet — a separate room you step into, with modules along one, two, or three walls. Gives the best overview of your wardrobe and the highest capacity, but needs a dedicated area of at least 4-5 m² (43-54 sq ft).

Wire-frame vs panel-based systems: what’s inside

Within any of the three formats, the interior fitout follows one of two logics.

Wire-frame system — metal rails and uprights that hold rods, wire baskets, and shelves. Installs in a day with no complex planning, reconfigures easily for a new need, and costs 30-40% less than a panel-based system. The downside: on spans over 900-1000 mm (35-39 in), the metal starts to sag under the weight of clothing and linens, and the look falls short of a closed cabinet.

Panel-based system — modules built from 16-18 mm particleboard or MDF, the same as standard cabinetry (for material details, see Particleboard, MDF, or Solid Wood: What Furniture Is Made From). Gives closed drawers, precise geometry, a premium look, and the option to build lighting into the fronts. Costs more and takes longer to install, but doesn’t sag and holds the rated load in each compartment for decades.

In practice, the two logics are often combined: panel-based modules around the perimeter plus wire baskets in separate sections for linens and small items.

Walk-in closet layouts

  • Linear — modules along one wall, aisle from 900 mm (35 in). Minimum for rooms of 4-5 m² (43-54 sq ft).
  • L-shaped — modules along two adjoining walls, from 2×2 m (6.5×6.5 ft).
  • U-shaped — modules along three walls, maximum capacity in a room of 6-8 m² (65-86 sq ft) and up, but needs a wider central aisle.
  • Island — perimeter modules plus a central island of drawers, often topped with a mirror or ottoman. Needs a 900-1000 mm (35-39 in) aisle on each side of the island, meaning a room at least 3.5-4 m (11.5-13 ft) on one dimension.

Interior fittings: rods, baskets, drawers, and special sections

  • Fixed rod — the standard for the top and middle tiers, steel or aluminum, rated at 15 kg (33 lb) or more per linear meter without bowing.
  • Pull-down (valet) rod — lowers the bar in one motion; essential if the top rod sits above 1.8-1.9 m (about 6 ft), i.e. ceilings from 2.7 m (about 9 ft).

  • Wire and fabric baskets — for linens, scarves, and small accessories, ventilated unlike closed drawers.
  • Shoe sections — sloped shelves with a lip or pull-out baskets; a sloped shelf fits 20-30% more pairs per shelf meter than a flat one.
  • Trouser and tie racks — pull-out frames with bars, saving space compared to storing items on hangers.
  • Luggage and off-season storage — usually the top tier without doors or with a hinged section, reached by a step stool or a pull-down rod.

Lighting

Lighting decides how usable and how “expensive” a closet feels in the dark of early morning or evening. The standard setup is a 12/24V LED strip with a motion sensor along shelf edges or under the top cornice; low-voltage wiring is mandatory inside a closed wood module for safety. For walk-in closets of 6-8 m² (65-86 sq ft) and up, add recessed ceiling lights, and in the premium tier, lighting built into drawer fronts.
