Baseboards and windowsills are minor line items on a budget, but they’re exactly where buyers cut corners and end up redoing the work a year or two later: plastic yellows in the sun, MDF pulls away from underfloor heating, cheap stone darkens from moisture. Here’s how baseboard and windowsill materials differ, what actually holds up to climate and underfloor heating, and what only works in dry rooms out of direct sun — plus what to lock into the spec when ordering from a factory in China.
Baseboards: PVC, MDF, solid wood, aluminum
- PVC (plastic) baseboard. The most affordable and moisture-resistant option, usually 40–100 mm tall, often with a built-in cable channel for wiring and perimeter outlets. Unaffected by moisture or temperature swings — works with underfloor heating, bathrooms, kitchens, and high-traffic commercial spaces. The downside is a plastic sheen and visible joint seams that stand out up close in a premium interior.
- MDF baseboard (laminated or veneered). The standard for residential interiors, color-matched to laminate or engineered flooring — manufacturers offer decors to match the floor finish. Height 60–120 mm. Handles moisture poorly (swells in bathrooms) and doesn’t tolerate the temperature swings of underfloor heating — it dries out and pulls away from the wall within 1–2 seasons without proper acclimation before installation.
- Solid wood or wood-veneer baseboard. A premium match for parquet and engineered flooring, in natural oak, ash, or walnut veneer. Needs stable indoor humidity of 40–60% — in a room with a dry heating season, solid wood cracks the same way the parquet flooring it trims does.
- Polyurethane baseboard. Flexible, easy to cut and paint any color, bends around curves — used for complex geometry, arches, columns, and often paired with a matching ceiling coving profile. Moisture-proof, but less impact-resistant than MDF or aluminum.
- Aluminum baseboard (including hidden-mount). A premium choice for modern, minimalist interiors: either a narrow visible profile or a fully hidden mount set into a wall channel before the finish floor goes down, often with an LED strip along the bottom edge. Won’t deform from underfloor heating or humidity swings, but needs precise planning at the rough-finish stage — the channel position can’t be corrected once the walls are done.
Windowsills: PVC, stone, quartz composite, wood
- PVC (plastic) windowsill. The base option for PVC windows, in white or laminated wood/stone finishes. Cheap, moisture-resistant, low-maintenance. The key risk is yellowing from UV without a stabilizer in the profile compound, especially on south-facing windows — stabilized and unstabilized PVC look identical at the time of order and only diverge after 2–3 years in the sun.
- Natural stone windowsills (marble, granite). A prestige premium option, usually 20–30 mm thick, polished or honed. Granite is close to non-porous and moisture-resistant with no upkeep; marble is porous and needs periodic sealing with a protective treatment, or it darkens from moisture and grease stains. Its weight requires solid structural support during installation.
- Quartz composite (engineered quartz stone). 90–93% ground quartz bound with polyester resin — non-porous, doesn’t absorb moisture, resists staining, and gives a uniform color across the slab with none of the veining or chips natural stone shows. More practical than marble for kitchens and bathrooms, where the sill often continues the countertop in a single material.
- Acrylic solid surface (Corian-type). A cast engineered material that molds seamlessly, including curved and custom profiles. Repairable — light scratches and wear buff out on-site without replacing the part. Pricier than PVC but cheaper than natural stone, common in design-forward projects.
- Wood or wood-veneer windowsill. A warm, prestige look for classic and Scandinavian interiors. Needs a lacquer finish in 3–4 coats and a ventilation gap from the radiator — without that, it dries out and discolors from constant heat and UV through the glass.
- Metal (aluminum) windowsill. For high-load commercial and public spaces — offices, hotels, retail. Won’t deform, unaffected by moisture, but colder to the touch and less common in residential interiors.

What to lock into the spec when ordering from a factory
- UV stabilization in the PVC profile compound for baseboards and windowsills — impossible to verify by eye at receiving; only the factory’s documentation or 2–3 years in the sun will show it.
- Stone or composite thickness and grade (usually 20–30 mm for windowsills) and batch consistency — natural stone is cut from different blocks, and without tone control, slabs within the same order can visibly mismatch.
- Underfloor heating compatibility as a separate line for baseboards: MDF and solid wood shouldn’t be specified for a project with underfloor heating without a separate sign-off from the factory.
- Aluminum profile thickness and mount type (surface or hidden in a wall channel) — a hidden mount needs to be planned into the rough-finish stage in advance; it can’t be changed after the flooring goes down.
