A single-slab marble kitchen island, a glass dome, a steel structure for a pool pavilion, or a 3-metre-wide furniture unit — they all share one trait: none of them fit a standard container, and none of them can be carried by hand. Oversized cargo isn’t an edge case; it’s a routine part of outfitting a villa, hotel, or commercial project once large stone slabs, single-piece glass, or engineered equipment enter the spec. Underestimating dimensions at the ordering stage doesn’t just add 10-15% to the cost — it means a port hold, a rerouted permit, or damaged cargo at the last mile. Here is how to move oversized freight out of China without surprises.

What counts as oversized or overweight

There’s no single formal threshold — cargo becomes a logistics problem the moment it stops fitting the standard chain:

  • By size. Doesn’t fit a 40HQ container by length (>12 m), width (>2.35 m), or height (>2.7 m) — typical for single-piece stone slabs, glass panels above 3 m, and large steel assemblies.
  • By weight per piece. Above 3-5 tonnes per packed unit — a standard forklift can’t lift it; you need a crane or reach stacker.
  • By center of gravity and fragility. Even standard-dimension cargo (say, a 3×1.2 m marble countertop at 30 mm thickness) becomes oversized in practice — it can’t be tilted, stacked flat with other freight, or moved without vacuum lifters.

In project outfitting, oversized cargo shows up most often in natural and engineered stone, architectural glass, metal and aluminium structures (wide-span doors and windows), engineered and kitchen equipment for HoReCa projects, and single-piece elements of outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas.

Ocean freight options for oversized cargo

A standard dry container (DC) doesn’t work here — you need dedicated equipment.

OT and FR rates typically run 30-60% above a standard container of the same size class — the premium covers port crane idle time and the higher handling risk. For a single large piece (a monolithic stone slab for a hotel lobby, say), break bulk is often cheaper and more reliable than chartering a whole flat rack.

Inland transport: permits and routing

Cargo travels by road from factory to port, and the same thresholds apply on land. Past roughly 2.5-3 m in width or 4.2 m in height, a standard trailer no longer works — you need a low-bed trailer and a special road permit from the provincial transport authority. The permit is tied to a specific route, sometimes requires an escort vehicle, and has to clear height-restricted bridges and tunnels along the way. Approval takes anywhere from a few days to 2-3 weeks depending on the route — build that time into the schedule before you confirm a site-readiness date.

The same issue applies on the receiving end: if the final destination is a villa on a narrow access road or a hotel in a historic district, a low-bed trailer carrying oversized cargo may not physically make the last stretch. Verify the full door-to-door route in advance — not after the container has already cleared customs.

Rigging and unloading on site

The real crunch with oversized cargo usually hits on site, not at the port. A crane or boom lift with the right capacity, slings rated for the actual lift points, and a level staging area to maneuver equipment — without these, a large piece simply can’t come off the trailer. Getting it into the building is a separate problem: doorways, staircases, and level changes are rarely designed for pieces above 300-500 kg, which means planning the indoor route in advance, and sometimes temporarily removing a window frame or railing.

For furniture and cabinetry, final on-site assembly needs fitting tolerances — the same logic covered in ordering furniture from China, but with the added constraint that an oversized element can’t be carried in and turned once walls and openings are finished.

Packaging for heavy and oversized cargo

For pieces above 1 tonne or worth more than $10,000, cargo insurance (0.3-1.0% of value) is effectively mandatory — damage to an oversized unit usually means a total loss, not a partial one, and a factory remake adds 30-45 days.

The code depends on material and end use, not size — the declaration uses the same commodity codes as a standard shipment, with a separate note on oversized status in the transport documents.

Duty and VAT depend on the destination country — check the current tariff schedule. Customs clearance for oversized cargo often needs an extra inspection or certificate simply because the shipment doesn’t fit a standard packaging unit.

Mini-case: a countertop that wouldn’t fit through the door

A client was outfitting a villa kitchen with a single-slab quartz island 3.4 m long — one continuous piece, no seams, for a seamless look. Dimensions and weight (about 280 kg at 30 mm thickness) were confirmed with the factory, crated in custom wood, and shipped by sea in an open-top container without incident.

The problem surfaced on site: the standard interior door and staircase couldn’t fit a piece that long and heavy without removing the kitchen’s window frame first. Removing and reinstalling the window, renting a boom lift to bring the slab in through the opening, and the resulting crew downtime added about 10 days and an unplanned $1,800 to the budget — even though the countertop itself arrived without a single chip.
