When you request a freight quote from China, the forwarder almost always asks for weight and volume. That question is not a formality — it decides whether the shipment is billed by weight or by volume, and the carrier always charges whichever figure costs more. Confusing gross, net, and volumetric weight is a common reason a preliminary freight estimate ends up 20-30% off the final invoice. Here is what each figure means and how to use them when planning a purchase.
Gross vs. net weight
Net weight is the weight of the product alone, with no packaging of any kind. It is the figure buyers care about from a “how much material did I get” standpoint, and it sometimes appears on the product specification sheet.
Gross weight is the product plus all packaging: the carton, pallet, stretch wrap, and — for furniture and stone — the plywood case or wooden crate. For bulky, fragile goods the gap between gross and net can run 15-25% of the product’s own weight — a marble countertop in a crated plywood box is noticeably heavier than the stone itself.
For logistics and customs, gross weight is what matters: it is what freight is billed on (when billing is by weight rather than volume), and it is what appears on the bill of lading, air waybill, and customs declaration. Volumetric weight: why a light shipment can cost like a heavy one
Carriers are paid for space in a container or on an aircraft, not literally for kilograms. That’s why a light but bulky shipment — the typical case for furniture, lighting, and décor — is billed not on actual weight but on volumetric weight, which converts cubic space into an equivalent weight figure. The carrier always compares actual weight against volumetric weight and bills whichever is higher.
The formula depends on the mode of transport:
- Air freight: packed volume in cubic centimeters (L x W x H) is divided by a factor of 6,000 to get volumetric weight in kg. A 40 kg sofa packed in a 200x90x90 cm carton comes out to roughly 270 kg of volumetric weight — nearly 7 times the actual figure.
- Sea and consolidated road freight (LCL): billing runs on the revenue ton — whichever is greater between actual weight in tons and volume in cubic meters, typically treating 1 CBM as roughly 1 ton for tariff purposes.
- Full container load (FCL): the rate is fixed per container regardless of what’s inside — weight and volume only matter for working out how much cargo fits.

Density: the parameter that gets confused with weight
Density (weight divided by volume) determines which figure the freight ends up billed on:
- High density (porcelain tile, natural stone, cast-iron sanitaryware) — almost always billed by actual weight, with volume a secondary factor.
- Low density (upholstered and assembled furniture, light fixtures, textiles) — almost always billed by volume: the cubic footprint of sofas and armchairs far outweighs their actual mass.
A mixed shipment (say, sofas and stone countertops in the same container) is calculated per product category, not averaged across the whole load — worth confirming with the carrier in the contract before shipping.
Common documentation mistakes
- Net weight listed instead of gross on the packing list. A factory in China often sends an initial specification with the weight of the bare product, no crating included — the final weight after packaging at the consolidation warehouse typically comes in 15-25% higher, and that needs to be built into the budget in advance, not discovered at shipping time.
- Volume calculated from product dimensions, not packaging. A 220 cm-wide sofa packed with corner protectors and wrap takes up more space than the “bare” dimensions in a catalog — volume calculations should use the packed dimensions.
- Weight discrepancy at the border. If the declared gross weight is noticeably lower than the actual weight at control weighing, customs treats that as grounds for a further review of the shipment’s declared value, not as a rounding error.
- Confusing revenue tons with actual tons. A “ton” in sea freight is a billing unit (the greater of weight and volume), not always a physical ton of mass — budgeting off the product’s spec-sheet weight alone is a common reason an initial estimate comes in low.
How to budget shipping in advance
- Ask the factory for the final packed packing list (not the product spec sheet), with real dimensions and gross weight for each carton or crate.
- Compare volume (CBM) and weight (kg/tons) using the formula for your transport mode, and see which one the shipment will actually be billed on.
- Budget for whichever figure is higher — not whichever looks better on paper.
- For mixed shipments, calculate each product category separately rather than the container’s overall volume.
